How we Harvest our Bees
Harvesting honey is a unique and beautiful experience, it takes time and skill to fully master. We have taken the time to show you how we do it, we follow 5 easy steps.
This should be done by professionals only!!!
-
We smoke the hive and remove the honey comb frames. Once each comb is removed from the hive, we shake the frame and brush the bees off with a bee brush or stiff broad brush in front of the hive so they can return to the hive.
-
The honey comb is cut from the frame with a chef knife, leaving about a centimetre of the comb all around, so that the bees can have a good starting point to rebuild the comb. We break the comb in half, fit it onto the sheet pan and return the frame to the hive.
-
The combs are crushed with a wooden pestle, which breaks the wax that is covering the comb apart, freeing the honey that is inside. Then we scoop the mashed comb and honey into a straining bucket.
-
We slowly pour the honey from the straining bucket into the prepared honey jar. When the bottle is filled, we remove the straining cloth and secure it with a lid, before moving on to the next bottle.
-
The filled bottles of honey are stored at room temperature.
